Top Women Freedom Fighters of India

India has a long history of Freedom Struggle in which we have seen many great figures standing up against the wrongdoings of our oppressors. Many great souls have sacrificed themselves so that we can live in a free and independent India. Many of the freedom fighters were Female which makes the freedom movements more inspiring and interesting.Today we are going to talk about various such Female freedom fighters whose lives should inspire the upcoming generations. Given below is the list of great women freedom fighters.

1.Rani Lakshmibai(19 November 1828 – 17/18 June 1858)

Lakshmibai also known as Manikarnika was an Indian queen and warrior. She was one of the leaders of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and became a symbol of resistance to the rule of the British East India Company in India. Manikarnika was born into a Maratha family at Varanasi. She was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao, the Maharaja of Jhansi in 1842 and became the Rani of Jhansi. British wanted to take over the princely state of Jhansi through the “Doctrine of Lapse”. Sir Hugh Rose came to capture the city of Jhansi in March 1858 but the brave Lakshmibai announced to fight for freedom instead to surrender. Although she was defeated in this battle she went to Kalpi camp and from there to Gwalior Fort. Here Lakshmibai with Damodar Rao, her son on her back fought bravely and died on the battlefield.

2.Kasturba Gandhi(11 April 1869 – 22 February 1944)

Kasturba Mohandas Gandhi was the wife of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In association with her husband, Kasturba Gandhi was a political activist fighting for civil rights and Indian independence from the British. She accompanied her husband to all demonstrations and movements and even took his place in his absence. She played the role of teaching Indians basic lesson of health, hygiene, discipline, reading, and writing due to lack of proper education to all. 

3.Sarojini Naidu(13 February 1879 – 2 March 1949)

She was an Indian independence activist and poet also known as The Nightingale of India.. Naidu served as the first governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh from 1947 to 1949.She was the first woman to become the governor of an Indian state and the second woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress in 1925. Naidu joined the Indian national movement in the wake of partition of Bengal in 1905. She traveled to various places in India and delivered lectures on social welfare, making women aware towards freedom struggle and motivating them to participate.

4.Madam Bhikaiji Cama (24 September 1861- 13 August 1936)

She belonged to Parsi community and was a philanthropist and an active social worker. Throughout her life, she struggled for Indian Independence. On 22nd August 1907, she unfurled the Indian flag (Flag of Indian Independence) in Stuttgurt, Germany while attending the International Socialist Conference, there she made people aware of the aftermath of the famine that had hit the Indian Subcontinent and raised her voice for the human rights and equality in India.

5.Durga Bai Deshmukh (15 July 1909- 9 May 1981)

She was a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and played an active role in Gandhi Satyagraha movement. She was a lawyer, a social activist and a politician. She was a Lok Sabha member as well as a member of Planning Commission of India. 

6.Captain Lakshmi Sehgal (24 October 1914- 23 July,2012)

Captain Sehgal not only led India's first All women regiment but was also a doctor,social activist and more. She was the one who led the Rani Jhansi Regiment,one of the first women contingent of the world.She was a practicing doctor up to the age of 92 and charged minimum fees to her patients.

All these women freedom fighters with their contribution made the Indian freedom struggle successful,  memorable and inspirational.
