To learn about Gender Equality in India, we need to look at Gender Inequality in India. It is a clearly known fact that gender bias exists in our country. We need to look at this topic in a bit more rational way.Gender inequalities impact India's sex ratio, women's health, their education and economic conditions. Research shows gender discrimination mostly in favor of men in many fields including the workplace. While Indian laws on rape, dowry and adultery have women's safety at heart, these highly discriminatory practices are still taking place at an alarming rate, affecting the lives of many today. This above image clearly shows us the ranking of India in various Global Gender Indices although these indices can be inaccurate. India is the world’s largest democracy, with 1.2 billion people, and is expected to be the world’s most populous country by 2050. The Constitution of India grants equality to women, ensures equality before the law, and prohibits discrimination against any citizen on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.
India launched the National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW) in 2010 to facilitate the coordination of all programmes related to women’s welfare and their socio-economic development across all ministries and departments. The government leads specific initiatives focused on gender equality and other programmes that benefit girls and women nonetheless.
